Two nights ago a friend of mine and I were out for dinner. On our way home we witnessed a serious car accident. A driver of an SUV ran a solid read light and collided with a small car with four young women in the car.

One of the women was seriously hurt and taken from the seen by ambulance on a spine board with suspected spinal injuries. The other three women and no doubt the driver of the SUV are all by now experiencing the not so pleasant sensations of whiplash injury.

The driver of the SUV understandably felt horrible for causing the accident. But none the less the accident did occur because he was not paying sufficient attention to his driving. In fact he was talking on his cell phone seconds after the accident occurred, so he may well have been talking on the phone when driving.

I have been treating motor vehicle accident injuries for more than 10 years. To often, these are horrible, life altering injuries that I would not wish on my worst enemy.

Please, please, please drive with due care and attention so you do not become another one of these people that have their life permanently changed (and definitely not for the better) because of a motor vehicle accident injury.

Exercise programs comprise an essential component the treatment program for many patients with neuromusculoskeletal injuries or disorders. Much of the one on one time physiotherapists spend with our patients is devoted to teaching or correcting prescribed exercises.

Exercises prescribed by physiotherapists comprise of:

Strength and stability exercises: to strengthen weak or over used muscle groups or rebalance muscle strength to correct imbalances.

Range of motion: to help restore normal mobility of a joint or body segment.

Proprioception: to improve a patient’s kinesthetic awareness of their body to allow for better more purposeful movement and decrease the chance of re-injury.

Cardiovascular: increasing the patient’s body’s ability to transport oxygen and nutrients throughout their body, weight loss, endurance and work tolerance, blood pressure control, emotional well being, overall health.

Sport/Job Specific: elite athletes and their coaches have known for decades now that achieving a high level of performance in a particular sport requires the athlete’s body to be specifically trained to handle the specific stresses their sport will subject to their bodies. Workers performing physical, especially repetitive tasks require their bodies handle the particular physical stressed their job requires and as such require job specific exercises.

Researchers have found that only 3% (thats 3 in 100!) of patients do their exercises when away from the clinic. Furthermore, it has been shown that even the patient’s that do their home exercises, patients most often perform the exercises incorrectly (don’t worry this is true for all of us!). Patients are not getting the required benefit and often even causing themselves further injury. Professional follow-up of the patient in regard to exercise programs is essential to maximize patient outcomes.
